Feld has strong showing for golf

The Drexel Dragons golf team competed in the Hartford Hawks Invitational this week, Sept. 26-27, in Connecticut. The team ended up finishing 12th out of the 17 teams that competed, but did have a golfer finish in the top 10 overall individually out of the nearly 90 golfers that competed.

Ben Feld, a junior, finished in eighth place with scores of 73, 71 and 73 for a total of 217. He has been off to a great start to the year so far, helping the Dragons to a fourth place finish at this season’s first tournament in New York in addition to his stellar individual performance in Hartford.

“I played well this week and was pleased to finish in the top-10 at such a strong tournament,” Feld said. “I hit a lot of good shots, but also made a lot of mistakes that I am going to work even harder to correct as we move forward. I will definitely take this tournament as a positive, but it also helped pinpoint areas of my game that need improvement to continue to get better.”

Other bright spots this season have been the play of freshmen James Parsons and Andrew Feldman, who both had solid days on the course. They have played well to start the year, but as Feld said there is room for improvement. His coach agreed.

“The team competed one hole and one shot at a time,” head coach Mike Dynda said. “We can improve our putting and short game skill with the goal to improve our scores.”

Going into the tournament the group was really positive because of that fourth place finish, and they were prepared well. They had high expectations because that is how they are taught to think. The positive thoughts have obviously paid off for this young group.

“Coach Dynda tells us, ‘dream big, expect nothing,’” Feld said. “Going into a tournament, all you can do is prepare yourself the best you can and to play at a high level. After that, it’s all really out of your hands. Looking ahead and thinking about the score doesn’t help you hit the shot at hand to the best of your ability and when it comes down it, the most important shot is the one that’s in front of you.

“I’ve been working to focus all my attention on the shot in front of me and giving it my full effort. Golf is too hard of a game to think about so many things at one time.”

Now that this tournament is over the team’s focus will turn to the next step, which is the Big Five Invitational. The goal for the team is to get better all season and make sure they are working hard enough on the course and in class. If they keep the right mind set the Dragons should have no trouble competing at every tournament.

“When we step on the golf course, the overall goal is to win,” Feld said. “I did a lot of good things this week and feel that the practice I am putting in to certain areas of my game is starting to pay off. All I can do going forward is to strive for more improvement every day and be prepared to play at a high level for the Big 5 Invitational.”
