The 72nd Golden Globe awards took place Jan. 11 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Compared to other award shows, the Golden Globes celebrate both television and film stars, and the winners are chosen through 93 members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

Every year, the attention to what the celebrities wear on the red carpet can either make or break their outlook for the rest of the season. It is often for highly respected designers such as Riccardo Tisci of Givenchy, Karl Lagerfeld of Chanel, or Donatella Versace of Versace to design custom-made gowns for the A-list celebrities.

The star that most certainly wowed everyone was Jennifer Lopez, in an embellished Zuhair Murad cape gown. The singer and actress looked stunning in the plunging neckline gown while promoting her upcoming film, “The Boy Next Door.” Although the barely-there gown was a risk for the star, it was beautifully structured and a definite standout.

To add to the list of celebrities who were dressed in a barely-there gown would be Kate Hudson, in an Atelier Versace gown. The actress decided to go for a white gown with a plunging neckline and cutouts going down the sides of her dress. In addition, Hudson decided to have her hair pulled back in order to direct all the attention at her custom gown. Hudson looked confident and alluring in such a daring gown, and she absolutely earns the title of best dressed this year.

Beautiful metallic gowns also made an appearance on the red carpet, most notably on best actress in a motion picture winner Julianne Moore and “Fifty Shades of Grey” actress Dakota Johnson. With her close relationship with Givenchy’s creative director, Riccardo Tisci, it was no surprise that Moore wore one of his couture designs to the award show. However, the heavily embellished metallic gown’s main feature was the feathered detail shown at the bottom, giving a touch of volume to the overall look. In addition, Johnson wore a silver Chanel couture gown with a slit up on the leg. The mullet dress was heavily adorned with metallic sequins, adding a delicate, intricate and fragile illusion to the gown.

Last but not least, another honorable mention to the best dressed list would be “Birdman” actress Emma Stone, who showed up to the red carpet in a Lanvin embellished jumpsuit. It’s always exciting to see an actress to step away from the couture gown norm, and wearing the complete opposite at an award show. Known as one of today’s biggest style stars, Stone looked well-tailored, modern, sleek and sophisticated in her Lanvin jumpsuit. She was highly praised for stepping out of the norm with this outfit, and she certainly stood out from the crowd in this look.

The major decision on what to wear to an award show can be one of the biggest decisions for any celebrity. A well-planned, sophisticated and unique outfit can drastically improve and promote a celebrity’s public image. The celebrities who were mentioned will undeniably make red carpet history from the outfits that they wore during this year’s Golden Globe awards.
