Back in the early days of The Triangle, our forefathers here at Drexel decided it was newsworthy to cover Drexel fraternity and sorority sports on a weekly to bi-weekly basis — but somewhere along the line that constant coverage was discontinued.
Well ladies and gentlemen, this gracious sports editor has decided that it was a bad decision to stop covering Greek athletics — so I’m bringing it back. Go ahead and read on about the on goings of the spring season in Greek athletics.
First we’ll start with the fraternity side. Spring competition for these men consists of softball and soccer.
Softball is a very tight knit sport this season as five teams are over the .500 mark, and three of those five are actually undefeated. The current standings are as follows: tied for first place at 3-0 are Alpha Chi Rho, Tau Kappa Epsilon and Pi Kappa Alpha; tied for fourth place at 2-1 are Pi Kappa Phi and Alpha Pi Lambda; and tied for sixth place at 1-2 are Sigma Phi Epsilon, Alpha Epsilon Pi and Phi Kappa Psi.
Next we have soccer, which again is very close when it comes to the standings. These standings are as follows: tied for first at 4-0 are Pi Kappa Alpha and Sigma Phi Epsilon; tied for third at 3-1 is Pi Kappa Phi and Alpha Epsilon Pi; tied for fourth at 2-2 are Alpha Chi Rho and Tau Kappa Epsilon; tied for sixth at 1-3 are Alpha Pi Lambda and Lambda Chi Alpha; and tied for ninth place at 0-4 are Phi Kappa Psi and Theta Chi.
Now lets move over to the sorority action. These ladies compete in the lone spring sport of soccer. The standings for this year look like this: tied for first place at 3-1 are Phi Sigma Sigma and Delta Zeta; tied for third place at 2-2 are Alpha Sigma Alpha and Delta Phi Epsilon; and in fifth place is Phi Mu with two losses and two forfeits.
Drexel Panhellenic Council has also gotten creative this year as they have begun naming weekly Most Valuable Players. Week one’s MVP was Alex Trimble of Phi Sigma Sigma; week two’s MVP was Megan Miller, also from Phi Sigma Sigma; week three’s award belongs to Simone Dallaire of Delta Zeta.
These girls have a chance to continue on to the playoffs. The playoffs will take place May 22 at Buckley Field. The schedule will be as follows: Delta Zeta will face Phi Sigma Sigma at 4:30 p.m., and Delta Phi Epsilon will matchup with Alpha Sigma Alpha at 5:30 p.m.
Now, obviously there are many areas that I was unable to cover this week, but give me a break, people; I just discovered this idea earlier in the week.
Hopefully, as we progress from spring term to summer term, and eventually to the fall term of 2011-12, this idea of continuously covering Greek athletics will progress with us.
Let me paint a picture for all of you reading this article — we will be able to cover these athletic events as if they were Division I sports with D-I athletes. We will give play-by-play and big-play notes within these articles.
Who knows, maybe we’ll send a photographer out to Fairmount Park in the fall to take photographs of the competitive rough-touch football league the Interfraternity Council runs for Drexel’s fraternity members.
We’ll see what happens, but I know that I would enjoy reviving such an age-old tradition that was tragically dropped years ago.
