The weather has turned away from the snowy, frigid temperatures of winter to the milder days of spring. Not only has baseball started, but the golf season has also gotten underway, and the Dragons have only one tournament left until the Colonial Athletic Association Championships.
The Dragons took part in the Wildcat Invitational at White Manor Country Club in Malvern, Pa. Apr. 3-4. The team finished 14th overall, ahead of six other teams, including Hofstra University and Pennsylvania State University. James Braunsberg shot a team-best 151 for the two-day tournament, which landed him in 27th place overall out of 105 golfers. This is the second time this spring Braunsberg led the team in scoring for a tournament. Sophomore Ben Feld followed closely with a score of 154 and finished in a tie for 35th place.
The team also competed at the Fireline Towson Invitational March 26-27, where they finished 15th out of 17 teams. The unfamiliar Maryland territory was not kind to the Dragons, as none of Drexel’s participants were able to crack the top 50 players. Feld led the team with a score of 236 over two rounds. Kent State University took first place overall with an impressive 33 strokes over second place Towson University, a team the Dragons will contend with at the CAA Championships.
The Dragons also saw success in a tri-match against Philadelphia University and Cabrini College March 22, coming in first place overall. The team shot a 305 collectively compared to Cabrini’s 311 and Philadelphia’s 324. Feld led all players with a round of 70, five strokes better than the second place player Greg Verde of Cabrini. Junior Mike Serensits recorded a third place finish with a round of 76. The blue and gold received a surprise when Billy Reube, a walk-on at Drexel, shot a fourth place score of 77 for the Dragons.
Drexel has one tournament left at Navy before they prepare for the CAA Championships in Pinehurst, N.C. April 22. Last year, 2009 defending champion Georgia State University repeated as champion by nine strokes over James Madison University.
The Championships have not been held at Pinehurst since 2006, when Georgia State also took the crown.
