‘Outer Banks’ is a worthwhile quarantine binge

The “Outer Banks” offers an escape from reality, following the story of parentless teenager John B (Chase Stokes) and his group of best friends, the “Pogues.” The group, nicknamed after their boat, are either fishing, surfing or getting into trouble everywhere they go. The Pogues are always up for an adventure and have their friend’s backs no matter what. The other members of the group are environmentalist Kiara (Madison Bailey), golden boy Pope (Jonathan Daviss) and troublemaker JJ (Rudy Pankow).

John B describes the Outer Banks as “a sort of place where you either have two jobs or two houses. Two tribes, one island.” Despite living in paradise, there is extreme tension between the Pogues and the rich kids in town, otherwise known as the “Kooks.” The Kooks feel the constant need to prove their superiority to the Pogues, which leads to nasty fights every time they see one another.

John B lives alone because his father has mysteriously gone missing at sea. He jokingly explains that both the positive and negative to this is that he is ignored and neglected. In other words, he and his friends can do whatever they want.

While John B makes light about the situation, he refuses to give up hope that his father may still be alive, even though it has been nine months since his disappearance. John B’s father spent his life researching the Royal Merchant, a famous ship that went missing over 150 years ago with $400 million worth of gold on it. Many have tried to find the treasure over the years but have failed.

On a seemingly typical summer day, a massive storm hits the Outer Banks. The Pogues decide to go into the marsh the day after the storm and come across a shipwreck. In typical Pogue nature, they decide it would be best to dive down into the wreck and see what they find. John B is shocked to discover his father’s compass with a handwritten clue inside of it.

From this moment forward, John B has made it his mission to complete his father’s quest in finding the missing treasure. The Pogues have joined in on the treasure hunt in hopes of finding out what happened to John B’s father and pursuing the possibility of a better life for them all. They quickly realize that they are not the only ones in town searching for the missing treasure and face obstacles none of them could have foreseen.

“The Outer Banks” is currently ranked No. 3 on Netflix’s top ten list and is most definitely binge-worthy. Check it out to experience an action-packed adventure that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
