Our University has been without a permanent president for almost a year since the passing of Constantine "Taki" Papadakis in April 2009. Taki helped to bring the University out of financial distress in the mid-90s with his strategic vision. Enrollment more than doubled, a medical campus was acquired, and most recently a law school was founded.

My father, like many of his co-workers, is a company man.

He's been working at SEPTA for over 32 years. When he retires, he'll get fat pension checks, full benefits, and - after he turns 62 - social security money from the federal government.

But according to the Department of Labor, today's average worker will hold 11 different jobs and change careers 6-7 times.

Westboro Church not welcome

The Westboro Baptist Church. By name alone, it sounds unassuming and inoffensive; after all, there are copious varieties of religious affiliations and organizations that co-exist in this world, and in large part, they co-exist peacefully. But what about an independent Baptist church that is more known for its hateful messages and incessant protesting than for any kind of actual religious doctrine? An organization whose Web site is called "God Hates Fags?" When an organization with such an indistinct, inoffensive name is discovered to have such horrifically cruel intent, it becomes impossible for concerned citizens to let the WBC continue on in its homophobic mission without making their intolerance widely known.

A couple of articles caught my attention recently. In one, the 345 richest American families were profiled. They all earned at least $400 million last year - gee, haven't they heard there's a de, sorry, recession going on? They paid an average of 16.6 percent in income taxes on these earnings, which is certainly a lot less than I did, and you too maybe.

When the Drexel men's basketball season ended March 9, so did my career covering the Dragons as an undergraduate.

It seems like just yesterday that I attended my first game Nov. 14, 2005 when Drexel took on Princeton in the NIT Season Tip-off at Jadwin Gymnasium, sitting up in the upper tank with the DAC Pack.

This March marks the 30th Anniversary of Writing Women Back into History, the theme of 2010's Women's History Month. The official celebration of women first started in 1911 with International Women's Day, gaining enough momentum and popularity so that by 1981, Congress passed a resolution recognizing Women's History Week.

10 I've said it before and I'll say it again: Kathryn Bigelow is the first woman to win Best Director because she's the first to have really earned it. This was not some political award; it was simply given to the person that put together what was considered to be the evening's best film.

Spring is a wonderful time of year - snow is melting, birds are chirping, and flowers are blooming. This week has been a wonderful example of the season if you don't include the clouds, cold breezes, and enormous monoliths of snow that still abound. It is around this time of year that beer drinkers begin to look towards the lighter bodied brothers of ales - lagers.

The scene from the new HBO miniseries "The Pacific" will be instantly familiar to anyone who has seen executive producer Steven Spielberg's other war films, such as "Saving Private Ryan." As hundreds of grey landing craft crawl towards an enemy beach the camera remains focused on the scared faces of the young marines as they each prepare for battle in their own way, one muttering prayers as another throws up from seasickness.
