RePlay Design Lab lowers in rank

Drexel University placed fifth and seventh respectively for their graduate and undergraduate video game design programs on The Princeton Review's yearly national ranking, a four place drop from last year's undergraduate placement as third best. According to Frank Lee, co-director of the RePlay Video Game Design Lab program, there is nothing to be concerned about.

Collegiate budgets discussed

The Obama administration started increasing their efforts for part of their college completion plan, which aims to make the United States the country with the highest graduation rate for college students. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, in a national conference call March 3 with reporters from news organizations including The Triangle, discussed the letter he sent to all 50 governors suggesting budgeting tips for school administrations earlier that day.

Innovation abundant on campus

Works from Sheryl Simons' English 101 and 102 classes will be featured on the Drexel Archives website starting the first week of next term. Inspired by President Barack Obama's State of the Union speech, the subject of the work will be Innovation at Drexel.

Students groped on campus

Two female students were sexually assaulted March 10 around 8 a.m. near the Drexel Quad. The assailant is said to be a mid-20s darker skinned Asian male, 5' 6" to 5' 7", wearing a grey colored jacket, with slight facial hair. In speaking of the incident, the first victim noted that she initially thought the man was a student and had appeared to be disoriented as he walked to her.

MAD Dragon scores IMA nominations

The CoMAD student-run label receives seven separate nods

MAD Dragon Records, the record label run by Drexel music industry students at the Antoinette-Westphal College of Media Arts and Design, and its artists received seven Independent Music Awards nominations in this year's 10th annual awards. MAD Dragon Records won the seventh and eighth annual IMA Awards in the category of College Label Release and is hoping to win it again in 2011 with songs by The Toy Soldiers and The Swimmers.

CHOP speaker talks informatics

Drexel's College of Information Science and Technology hosted Dean Karavite from the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia March 8 for a lecture titled "Shared Perspectives and Experience on Health Informatics in Practice." Karavite is a lead human-computer interaction specialist at the Center for Biomedical Informatics at CHOP.

Segway exhibit rolls to Armory

Collaborating with the DeTour Segway Tours of Philadelphia, Drexel held an event for students, faculty and staff March 8 to test participants' mental and physical skills as they tried to maneuver the high tech pieces of machinery around the Drexel Armory on 33rd and Cuthbert streets.

Design winner named

The winner of The Wardrobe Boutique's inaugural recycled clothing competition, which challenged 16 Drexel design and merchandising students to create unique window displays, was announced during an awards reception held March 8 at the boutique. Drexel design and merchandising students enrolled in the Visual Merchandising class competed in the challenge, for which they planned and executed their designs in a matter of weeks.

Alumna takes on 'Masters'

Celina Tio to appear on Bravo's Top Chef

Drexel alumna Celina Tio, who graduated in 1992 from Goodwin College's hospitality management program, has joined the cast of Bravo television's third season of "Top Chef Masters." Since receiving her bachelor's at Drexel, Tio has received critical acclaim for her unique take on American comfort food, having been recognized as "Chef of the Year" in 2005 by Chef Magazine and the "Best Chef: Midwest" in 2007 by the James Beard Foundation, among other prestigious awards.
