"Layoffs should be based on a number of factors, but the most important thing we can do is keep the best teachers in schools where they are needed most," Duncan said.

Duncan accompanied President Barack Obama to a Floridian high school, Miami Senior Central High, March 4, which Duncan praised for their effective use of federal funding to improve student learning. The high school has continually ranked as one of the lowest achieving institutions in the Miami district, but has recently tried to increase its standing and student achievement with the $800,000 it received in federal funding.

Duncan also made a public appearance with Obama March 8 at Tech Boston Academy, where they were joined by Melinda Gates, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. According to an official press release provided by the White House, "They highlighted the shared responsibility government, businesses, philanthropists, educators and local communities have to promote innovative education strategies that will prepare American students to win the future."

While these education reforms do not necessarily have an educational effect on current Drexel University students, since Drexel is a private university and does not receive funding from the state of Pennsylvania, it will impact future and prospective students still in high school.
