Softball's talent will lead to wins

A year after just missing out on an invitation to the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament, Drexel's head softball coach Kim Camara is confident that her team, picked to finish fifth this season, will make an impact and prove that they deserve to be a top team in the conference.
"Last year was a big growing year," Camara said. "I think we learned a lot from last year, our wins and our losses, and how we compete. I think that we would have loved to have made the tournament but it definitely made us stronger for this year going forward."
Confidence can do a lot of things, but it can't replace a career .362 hitter with school records in hits and RBIs (108) in Ashley Botelho - that's junior Paige Collings job.
For the previous two seasons, Collings has been second on the team in almost every category - she hit one more home run (8) than Botelho last season - and will now step into the top role on the team with Botelho's departure.
A career .336 hitter, Collings splits her time between catcher and first base. She will look to lead a new Drexel softball team to a spot in this year's CAA tournament.
Along with Collings, Camara feels that a few players that didn't necessarily make an impact in previous years will step up into large roles this season, eventually helping the Dragons reach their ultimate goal.
"I definitely expect us to make the CAA tournament, and to get there I think it's anybody's ball game," Camara said. "I definitely think that we have the talent and the ability to make the top four in the CAA's and also make some waves in non-conference with some teams that we may not have beaten.
"We have to play our game; we have to do things the right way and stay healthy. Some things have to fall in our tracks but I feel like we have the ability to be successful."
In trying to fill the void left by Botelho's graduation from Drexel, Camara realized that to replace a player of her caliber is almost impossible.
