The Drexel men's soccer team won its first conference game in dramatic fashion, defeating Towson 6-5 in double overtime Oct. 3 at Vidas Field.
Nathan Page got the golden goal for the Dragons in the second extra session, ripping a low liner into the right side of the net to send the Drexel bench into a frenzy.
"It was a wild game of course, but I must say, the real winner tonight was Drexel and our fans," Andrew Goldberg, who assisted on Page's game-winner, said. "Every time they come it's so hard for them to leave. Must be something we put in the water."
The Alumni game was an exciting one against the Tigers. It was a tale of cat and mouse with each team equalizing the other almost immediately until Page's game-ending goal gave the Dragons (5-4, 1-0 Colonial Athletic Association) a well-earned victory. Towson's original two-goal lead vanished in the second half and it lost the match with four minutes left in the second extra period.
Right before the end of regulation time, it seemed like there was no hope of winning. The Dragons were trailing 5-4 with less than four minutes left in regulation when Goldberg got to the ball. There was a scramble on the right side of the goal, so Goldberg took a quick shot and tied the match. He finished with two goals and one assist, while Fabio Assumpcao added two goals.
The Dragons (5-5, 1-1) were not quite as successful in their contest Oct. 7 with Delaware, falling 2-1. After a scoreless first half, Darren Christie from the Blue Hens scored both the team's goals.
Assumpcao scored his team-leading sixth goal of the season during the match. This is the highest goal total in a season for the senior midfielder. It is also the most goals scored by a Dragon since Anthony Bafile put in six in 2007 during the Dragons' run to the regular-season CAA championship.
Drexel will travel to Atlanta, Ga. Oct. 10 to play Georgia State at 1 p.m.
