AEPi registers students for bone marrow donations
The brothers of Alpha Epsilon Pi dedicated six hours of their time to register students with the Gift of Life Bone Marrow Foundation May 20.
As North America's Jewish bone marrow donor registry, the Gift of Life Bone Marrow Foundation seeks potential donors of bone marrow, blood stem cell and umbilical cord blood.
"I am glad I could help out with such a noble cause," Shaw Levin, Alpha Epsilon Pi president, said.
According to Alex Mandel, Alpha Epsilon Pi vice president, the chapter supports the foundation because it is the only registry, which includes recruitment in the Jewish community.
"The chances of a match being found greatly increase when a patient is tested against donors in his or her own ethnicity," Mandel added.
In addition, a patient has a higher chance of finding a match if the registry has more potential donors in it. Over 300 students registered and had their cheeks swabbed in order to become a potential donor.
"Knowing that what I am doing can one day save a child's life is a very powerful feeling," Mandel said.
Fraternity hosts Halo 3 Tournament
Sigma Beta Rho Fraternity hosted its first annual Halo 3 Tournament May 28.
"There is plenty of talk between students regarding who is the best at Drexel University," Hussain Burhanpurwala, Sigma Beta Rho vice president, said. "The only effective method of deciding is to participate in the tournament and see who survives."
The four-hour competition awarded the winner, dutifully dubbed as the "Drexel Master Chief," with a one-year subscription to Xbox Live; second and third place winners received a three-month subscription.
Players competed against each other in a free-for-all style, which included four players. In order to advance to the next round, each player had to successfully complete two 10-minute rounds. After the second round, the completion became single elimination.
"The tournament was a lot of fun; the brothers spent a lot of time and energy preparing and organizing the event," Burhanpurwala said. "This competition was expected to be the largest of its kind this year."
