In an effort to raise awareness about the environment and alternative methods of transportation, Drexel's Sierra Club held a nighttime 10-mile bike ride Aug. 21 to and from the Falls Bridge in Philadelphia, according to Kelsey Gibbons, co-president of the organization.
The Sierra Club is a national organization dedicated to raising environmental awareness and protecting the global environment. According to Gibbons, the Drexel chapter focuses specifically on protecting the environment on Drexel's campus and raising awareness among the Drexel community.
"Our club works to create a greener Drexel and strengthen community and social ties," Gibbons said.
As part of its mission, the club holds bike rides every first and third Wednesday of the month that explore different areas of the city and its surroundings, according to Gibbons.
"We were just looking to enjoy the beauty of the Schuylkill [and to introduce people] to the city and Fairmont Park," Gibbons said.
According to Gibbons, the club regularly holds environmental activities such as bike rides and camping trips throughout the month to raise awareness about the Philadelphia environment. The Sierra Club has also worked closely with other groups on campus, including Engineers Without Borders and the Drexel Smart House.
One of the biggest events coordinated by the Sierra Club was the recent April 26 Rock for Roots concert.
"[In addition to our biking and camping events,] we push for sustainable practices on campus and increased environmental education," Gibbons said.
According to Gibbons, while the Sierra club supports the Drexel administration's green initiatives, the University can do more.
"We want the different departments to commit to sustainable buying policies and put more emphasis on the environment in all of the classes," Gibbons said.
