To win, Elegar must get the ball

This isn't calculus: Get Them The Damn Ball!

At Drexel you'd probably get formulas way more difficult than this one.

It's simple. I mean it's easier than University 101.

The equation: (Elegar or Westbrook) + Ball = Points = Victories.

Simple enough right? (Terrell Owens certainly didn't think so)

Don't worry. There are no derivatives or integrals.

However, this can be the difference between wins and losses, success or failure.

Plus poor grades on the Daily News' post game report card- or The Triangle's, if we actually had that.

Fortunately the Drexel offense has figured it out, ever since Frank Elegar emerged as a prolific inside scoring threat last season, when he averaged 16 points per game.

More importantly the team went as far as Elegar could take them.

In historic wins over Syracuse and Creighton the 6-foot-9 center scored a combined 46 points.

If you ask anyone why Drexel was able to win those games they would say because when Elegar got the ball he was unstoppable.

Plus the other players were able to benefit, because their concentration on Elegar brought more open shots for his teammates, especially from the perimeter, as a result of the double and triple teams he was seeing.

In his first two games this season Elegar is averaging 19 ppg.

It has been no surprise that Drexel is 2-0 in those contests.

He has clearly shown why he was named to the preseason All-CAA first team.

The Eagles, on the other hand, have not really applied this formula for the first half of the season.

Last week, however, they answered the prayers of fans and media members alike allowing their star running back out of Villanova to touch the ball 25 times, 20 on the ground and five through the air.

Westbrook made the most of his opportunity, totaling 183 yards and three touchdowns, including his last, a 57-yard score off a screen pass, which silenced the sellout crowd at FedEx Field in Landover as the Eagles defeated the Redskins 33-25, essentially saving their season - at least for now.

The Eagles now stand at 4-5, and have a great chance to get back to .500 when they host the worst team in the NFL, the 0-9 Miami Dolphins.

If the Birds wish to get back into the playoff hunt they need to continue following the formula.

Oh, and so do our Drexel Dragons.

To Jamie Harris, Gerald Colds, Scott Rodgers and anyone else who handles point guard duties: Get The Ball To Frank!

Who knows, you might even get it back.

Fortunately if you miss this class, you won't need to make anything up.

No, there's no midterm or final.

There's not even that dreadful 8-10 page research paper.

If you watch them, you'll know it.
