Looking to rebound after suffering their first loss in eight games, the Dragons were unable to score for the second consecutive game as they got shut out by Northeastern, 2-0.
The loss dropped Drexel's record to 9-4-2 (6-2 CAA) for the season, and it was the team's first loss on the road in conference play. With the win, the Huskies improved to 6-8-1 (4-3-1 CAA) on the year.
Northeastern jumped out in front less than three minutes into the game when senior forward and team captain Greg Kilkenny converted a penalty kick for his fifth goal of the season, giving the Huskies the early 1-0 advantage.
The Huskies extended their lead when senior forward Ahmed Talaat took a pass from teammates Santiago Bedoya and Padraig Tangney and fired it past goalkeeper Cory Robertson from 20 yards out at the 23:48 mark, giving Northeastern the 2-0 lead. For Talaat, it was his team-leading seventh goal of the year.
Trailing by two goals, the Dragons fired off 13 shots in the second half, but nothing got past Northeastern goalie Mahmoud Talaat, who made seven saves in the game. Pat McCaffery, Fabio Assumpcao and Leland Raum led the Drexel offensive attack, each getting two shots on goal.
Goalie Cory Robertson made five saves for the Dragons. Even with the consecutive losses, Robertson has only allowed six goals this season, and he still ranks first in the CAA with a 0.56 goals-against-average.
Drexel outshot Northeastern for the game, 20-13. The Dragons also doubled up the Huskies in corner kicks, earning four while Northeastern only managed two.
Drexel will close out the regular season with three home games, beginning with a Nov. 2 showdown against third place William & Mary (8-6-3, 5-2-1 CAA). The Dragons will then play CAA-leader Old Dominion (10-5-1, 7-1 CAA) in a game that will likely have first-place implications on Sunday.
Delaware (2-11-2, 2-5-1 CAA) will end the regular season for Drexel when they come to town Nov. 8.
