The awards and honors continue to pile up for Karie Walton, captain of the Drexel women's field hockey team. Walton was named to the 2006-07 ESPN: The Magazine Academic All-America Women's At-Large First Team. This is the second time that Walton has earned Academic All-America recognition.
A senior majoring in biology, Walton holds a perfect 4.0 cumulative GPA. In May at the Scholar-Athlete Awards, she was a recipient of the Mario V. Mascioli Scholar-Athlete award, presented to those with a 4.0 GPA. She also took home the Mary Semanik award for the most outstanding senior female student-athlete.
In addition to those accolades, Walton was named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association All-Academic team for the fourth straight year and was the Philadelphia Inquirer Field Hockey Academic Performer of the Year for the second year in a row.
Walton, a fullback/midfielder on the team, was the anchor of the Dragons' stingy defense, which allowed just 2.56 goals per game. In their eight wins, they allowed a mere 1.37 goals per game. She was tied with fellow seniors Heather Bloemker and Cassandra Prentiss for the team lead in defensive saves with two apiece.
Walton also scored two goals and assisted on another, giving her a career-high five points for the season. Her first goal of the season came against St. Francis (Pa.) in a 10-0 rout where the Dragons set a new school record for goals scored in one game. The previous record had been seven goals. However, after winning six of their first seven games to begin the season, the team would finish with an 8-11 record.
Last season, Walton was selected to the 2005-06 ESPN: The Magazine Academic All-America Third Team. She has also been named to the Academic All-District II First Team all four of her seasons here at Drexel and is a two-time All-CAA Second Team and Mid-Atlantic Region selection.
Walton's Academic All-America selection is only the 22nd time that a Dragon has been honored with the national award. Walton joins only four other Dragons to earn the All-America honor more than once. With the First Team selection, she becomes the first Drexel student-athlete since 1993, when Drexel women's softball player Kelli Griffith earned that very same honor.
A starter in every game in her four seasons, Walton finishes her Drexel field hockey career with four goals and three assists, totaling eleven points.
