The release date for Unleashed2 is June 27, and it will be available in retail throughout the mid-Atlantic. Copies of the record were also distributed at the CD release party last weekend. The release party took place downstairs at World Café Live, June 3.
Performers for the evening included MAD Dragon artists Matt Duke, Jules Shear, Andrew Lipke and Hoots & Hellmouth, Philly's own Liam & Me, Darcie Miner, The Jangling Sparrows, and Liam's Wake.
Some might remember back in 2004 when Mad Dragon's first release, Unleashed, came out. The album featured such groups as Polymer, Alphabet Army and Stereo Generation. Two years later, Unleashed2 has surfaced through a slightly different process, which proved to be long and rewarding.
It all began with an artist-and-repertoire workshop at Drexel during the winter and spring terms of 2006.
During winter term, the students in the class were responsible for identifying 25 prospective bands every week for the compilation. The students brought their lists of artists to class, then discussed and voted on each artist. At the end of the term, students picked their top artists to appear on Unleashed2.
The process continued in the spring term as students began contacting the artists. Artists who accepted the invitation then sent a master of their selected track in, along with a signed licensing agreement. Students were responsible for staying in touch with the artists throughout the entire process.
Students were assigned specific tasks throughout the making of Unleashed2. Some worked with the staff at World Café Live to organize the release party. Others were responsible for organizing the playlist, mastering, licensing, graphic designing and artwork.
The artists chosen for the compilation include former Ben Lee guitarist McGowan, Philly's own Liam & Me, former Jimmy's Chicken Shack artist News Travels Fast, Drexel alumni the A-Sides, Spiritual Rez, Mieka Pauley, The Extraordinaires, Mittens, Katherine Rhoda, Afterdrama, The Jangling Sparrows, Jupiter Sunrise, Acme Rock Group, Darcie Miner, Liam's Wake, and Christopher Jankoski.
All proceeds from Uleashed2 will go to the Orlando Darias-Rojas Scholarship Fund, which provides financial aid to a future music student at Drexel University. Orlando was a percussionist and graduate from Drexel University's Music program. He passed away in 2005.
