This weekly feature delves into the extensive The Triangle archives to reminisce of days gone by at Drexel University. This is not current news, but rather news articles that students last year, five years and 10 years ago this week read on the front page of The Triangle.
One Year Ago - October 1, 2004
Grant Dilibero, a junior information sciences and technology major, was stabbed in the early morning hours of Sept. 23 at Natrona and Summer Streets. Dilibero and some of his roommates were hosting a party at their home when a group os strangers arrived at the house. They disrupted the gathering by offending those in attendance and were soon told to leave. They eventually returned and picked a fight with one of Dilibero's friends. Dilibero was informed of the fight and ran outside his house to break it up. In the process, he was stabbed and later rushed to Presbyterian Hospital and then transferred to the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center where he stayed five hours before being released. Some time before Dilibero's stabbing, his house and others were robbed by someone posing as a repairman. A week later, the same person returned trying to sell items. He was later caught and faced burglary charges.
Five Years Ago - October 6, 2000
The construction of the Student Development Center was completed by mid-winter 2000, as forecasted by Director of the Creese Student Union Complex Walter Brady. The new meeting place housed 15 office clusters, three to four groups each, a storage facility, two huge conference rooms and two administrative conference. The center was situated near the Commuter Lounge and included what was formerly the dining area, bowling lanes and the game room. Assistant Director of the Office of Student Activities Ari Hauben stated that the center's final cost was $600,000. However, some groups did not obtain space since they did not qualify for more than what was deemed necessary. Furthermore, the Writing Center was moved to its current location, 032 MacAlister Hall, from the fifth floor.
Ten Years Ago - October 6, 1995
The first meeting of the Undergraduate Student Government Association dealing with the University's alcohol guidelines came to a standstill as the Speaker Jared Levine, President Steve Martorano and College of Engineering representative Ed Gillison each conducted the meeting in their own way. Student Vice President of Academic Affairs and Provost Jason Frye mentioned the expansion of the "Ts for Threes" campaign, where T-shirts were distributed during sporting events, advertising establishments that sold alcoholic beverages and paired Drexel-related sports logos with them.
