Dragon softball finishes season quietly

The Drexel softball team (15-35-2, 3-14 in Colonial Athletic Association games) concluded its season May 9 with a 2-0 loss to Towson Tigers (34-26-0, 10-7-0 CAA).

The defeat was the 12th in a row for the Dragons (a team record for consecutive losses), who finished the season losing 20 of their last 24 games, complete with a 41-inning scoreless streak. Freshman Jessica Sinkule (0-10, 7-19 ERA in 14 games) turned in a stellar pitching performance, keeping the Towson bats silent until the later innings.

Both Sinkule and Towson starter Jillian Kiley worked efficiently, and Kiley opened the game with 4-2/3 perfect innings. Drexel threatened with back-to-back singles in the bottom of the fifth inning by Liza Fuller (.229 BA, one home run, 6 RBI) and Amanda Heyser (.157, four RBI), but a Sinkule (0-for-23 this season) groundout ended the inning with no damage done.
Towson first started a rally in the third inning, and after a single and a Krista Van Wert (team-high 13 errors) error, the Tigers had runners at first and third base. Sinkule induced a fly ball to right field by Megan Zwoyer that Heyser easily caught to end the scoring opportunity.

Towson's half of the sixth inning produced the only runs of the game. Jenny Edwards and Jeanne Bosch (five-for-eight, five RBI in the three-game series) both reached base, and first baseman Samantha Schaukowitch slapped a double down the left field line, plating both runners. Schaukowitch moved to third on a throwing error by Fuller.
Sinkule was able to end the inning, but two runs was all Kiley needed to end the contest. Drexel threatened again in the bottom of the seventh inning, as freshman third baseman Bri Brown (.270, one HR, team-high 17 RBI) and catcher Jonnae McClain (.239, two HR, 14 RBI) both hit singles with one out. Kiley, however, forced two ground balls, ending the game with the runners stranded.

Sinkule pitched seven strong innings, allowing two runs on seven hits, striking out one. Kiley struck out six Drexel batters in a complete game shutout, allowing just four hits. The game was shortstop-third baseman Debbie Botke's (.261, 36 hits, 13 RBI) last as a Dragon, despite her eagerness to continue playing.
