Drexel University received $25 million in funds, the largest gift in Drexel's history, toward the Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts and Design. The gift was given by an anonymous donor, who is a trustee of the University, according to Mark Greenberg, interim provost and senior vice president of the Pennoni Honors College.
Drexel Business Services introduced "The Balanced Way," a nutrition program to encourage students to eat in a healthy way that will launch Feb. 4. Franceen Friefield, a nutrition expert, explained that this was a program to encourage college students to eat healthy.
A protest for gay rights was held at Central High School in Philadelphia with picketing from pro-rights and anti-gay groups Jan. 5. The Westboro Baptist Church released a statement Jan. 1 of their intention to hold a religious protest against the employment of homosexual faculty members at the high school.
Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter addressed the Philadelphia public Dec. 27, reflecting on his administration's work in 2008 and looking ahead to what the City will face in 2009. According to Nutter, the administration succeeded in most of its goals for the City, but the success was eclipsed by the financial crisis.

Drexel University opened its Center for Graduate Studies in Sacramento, Ca., Jan. 5. President-elect Barack Obama will assume the presidency and give his inaugural address Jan. 20. In the past months following the election, Obama has been working to establish his cabinet for his first term. "I think [Obama] is mostly going to talk about the economy [in his inauguration speech]," Mike Hess, chairman of the College Republicans, said.
Jane Bryan, 65, died Dec. 15 at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania due to complications from amyloidosis. Bryan was the director of libraries at Drexel University and was heavily involved with the Drexel Votes 2008 initiative. According to Mark Greenberg, interim provost and senior vice president of the Pennoni Honors College, Bryan was "instrumental" in developing and expanding the University library, as well as the library for the Earle Mack School of Law.
The 311 toll-free service number, which allows people in Philadelphia to call for information about the City, City services or general information, was launched Dec. 31. According to the Mayor's office, 311 can answer questions concerning directory assistance, information services, service requests, and updates on special events.
