Chief Justice of Pakistan visits Drexel

Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, Chief Justice of Pakistan, visited Drexel University and the University of Pennsylvania Nov. 20, to speak on his experience as Chief Justice both under and after the rule of President Pervez Musharraf. In March 2007, President Musharraf suspended Chaudhry and later in November, declared a state of emergency in Pakistan and placed Chaudhry under house arrest for several months before his release in May 2008.

Craigslist founder to speak at Drexel

Craig Newmark, founder of the web site craigslist.com, will speak at Drexel Nov. 24 in a lecture open to the public, hosted by four colleges. Newmark will be speaking on the subject of the Drexel interview, according to Suzanne Rocheleau, associate dean of special projects for the Pennoni Honors College.

Locals protest Prop. 8

Several hundred people gathered in front of City Hall Nov. 15 to protest the passing of Proposition 8, which banned same-sex marriage in California. "Join the Impact" was a nationwide peaceful protest held in 300 cities across the country. Gay rights supporters joined together to stand up for what they believe in.

DPS announces new safety campaign

The Department of Public Safety has announced a "Protect your Valuables" campaign to make students more aware of unattended thefts on campus, according to Ed Spangler, director of Police Operations. Spangler said 80 percent of total crimes in the Drexel Patrol Zone are thefts and 70 percent of non-retail thefts are attributed to unattended or improperly secured items.

'Hitch' comes to campus

David Coleman, known across the nation as the "Dating Doctor" and "America's Real-Life Hitch," spoke to Drexel students Nov. 17 on his ideas and theories about relationships. Coleman addressed many questions about relationships including "Why don't men call us back?" and "Why do women go to the bathroom in groups?" He also incorporated a number of pick-up lines that are actually used in reality.

Department head nominated for IEEE

Moshe Kam, department head of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Drexel University, was nominated Nov. 16 for the 2010 presidency of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. "These are not opponents; these are colleagues. We have worked together before and we will work together afterwards," Kam said.

LeBow college sponsors food drive

The Drexel University LeBow Graduate Student Association will sponsor the "Preston and Steve Camp Out for Hunger Food Drive" through Nov. 28, and all food collected will be donated to Philabundance, a food bank and hunger relief organization in the Delaware Valley.

City passes casino zoning legislation

Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter signed zoning legislation Nov. 16 that will consider the move of Foxwoods Casino from South Philadelphia to The Gallery in Center City. "The two pieces of legislation represent the beginning of a process that we're going through," Luke Butler, deputy press secretary from the office of Mayor Nutter, said.
