Drexel men's basketball coach Bruiser Flint is not used to losing. In his first six seasons, the Dragons had a 106-74 record. However, after losing three starters from his 23-9 team in 2006-07, Flint's mostly young and inexperienced roster went a disappointing 12-20 overall last season, losing 19 of its last 26 games and finishing tied for last in the Colonial Athletic Association after compiling a 5-13 mark in the conference.
After Drexel's best year in the Colonial Athletic Association since joining the conference in 2001-02, the Lady Dragons are hoping to continue their success as they prepare for potentially one of the most exciting seasons in the past decade. Perhaps this team will be better than most are anticipating.
"I'm fairly sure, looking at the crowd, that this is Drexel's home game. The Penn student section is even smaller than I expected it to be, while Drexel's is at least twice as big and goes all the way up to the last row behind the east basket." - Jonathan Tannenwald, Philly.
Co-Sports Editor Brett Fischer sat down with men's basketball coach Bruiser Flint to discuss the upcoming season. The Triangle: What is your biggest challenge you face this season? Bruiser Flint: Last year we weren't ready. We got off to a good start. When it came down to it, we weren't prepared to step up to the competition.
Co-Sports Editor Mike Mazzeo sat down with women's basketball coach Denise Dillon to discuss the upcoming season. The Triangle: After the tremendous season you enjoyed last year winning 18 games and going 13-5 in the conference, how do you keep your team focused on taking that next step? Denise Dillon: I think the biggest thing is just being hungry to do better and do more.
In anticipation of The Battle of 33rd St. Nov. 18 on ESPN, here's a look at Drexel-Penn by the numbers. 0: Times the two teams have played at the Daskalakis Athletic Center, prior to their Nov. 18 showdown. 0.2: Tenths of a mile that separates the Palestra and the DAC (approximately).
At Drexel basketball games, normally the chants heard in the stands contain Philadelphia's native son Rocky - but when the men's basketball team squares off against the University of Pennsylvania Nov. 18, there will be a new chant, the Drexel University fight song.
Nov. 16, Drexel University will have the opportunity to experience something that has never been done in the history of the school. The Drexel University women's basketball team, the Lady Dragons, will have its game broadcasted over the air on Drexel's student radio station 91.
