Van Rensselaer Hall, located at 3320 Powelton Ave., will now be the polling place for voters of the 24th Ward, 10th division, formerly located at 3500 Lancaster Ave. This move comes following a petition filed last spring on behalf of Drexel Votes 2008 and a public hearing last month, according to a news release.
The 2008 President's Awards Ceremony was held Oct. 15 in the main quad on campus to acknowledge University employees who help achieve the mission and goals of Drexel with their "innovation and excellence," according to the University's web site. This is the highest honor that can be given to employees, according to the web site, and the awards were extended to staff members and teams within both Drexel University and the Drexel University College of Medicine.
The Founder's Day Convocation of Drexel University was held Oct. 17 in the auditorium of Main Hall to officially welcome students, staff and faculty to the new school year. Opening remarks by President Papadakis focused on Drexel's recent achievements as well as its coming plans and goals.
A female Drexel student reported Oct. 12 that she was held captive and sexually assaulted in South Philadelphia by a taxicab driver, according to an incident report from Drexel's Department of Public Safety. A police source said the car could have been an Olde City Taxi however; the investigation is still ongoing, according to the Philadelphia Police Special Victims Unit.
The University of Pennsylvania police arrested Jerry Porter, a suspect in the recent burglaries that occurred between Sept. 14 and Oct. 7 in local Drexel fraternity and sorority residences, as well as at Penn, according to Jim Katsaounis, executive director and senior vice president of Student Life and Administrative Services.

Alan Lichtman, professor of history at American University, held a lecture at Drexel Oct. 9 on his "13 Keys to the White House" theory, which is used to predict whether or not the incumbent party will be re-elected for office. During the lecture, sponsored by the Great Works Symposium, Lichtman said the keys have been accurate about predicting the popular vote "since the horse and buggy days.
October 6, 2008 THEFT-BICYCLE 1:43 a.m. 3400 Block of Powelton Ave. DPS and Penn Public Safety collaborated to apprehend a known bike thief stealing a bike from Towers Hall on 34th and Powelton Ave. The male and the bike were taken into custody.
Eight interior design students in the Alternative Environments class participated in "The Last Designer Standing" Oct. 5-8, a competition to develop a room for residents at St. Ignatius Nursing Home on 44th Street and Haverford Avenue. "The whole idea was to kind of create the resident home of the future," Christopher Hansen, a pre-junior majoring in interior design, said.
Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) faced challenger Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) in the final of three presidential debates Oct. 15 at Hofstra University in Hempstead, N.Y. Bob Schieffer of CBS moderated the debate that focused largely on domestic issues; the two candidates covered topics that spanned from the economy to energy, healthcare, Supreme Court nominees and education.
The Drexel salsa team, Salsa Con Caché, will offer dance lessons Oct. 21 and Oct. 28 in honor of Latino Heritage Month at the Daskalakis Athletic Center.
