Biopic of college athlete transcends sport film mold

Gary Fleder's "The Express" is the quasi-biopic of Ernie Davis, the first black college football player to be awarded the prestigious Heisman Trophy. Despite a somewhat formulaic treatment of the plot and many of the same clichés typical of films in the sports-drama sub-genre, "The Express" prevails, in large part due to convincing acting and an engaging exploration of the racial woes that afflicted mid-20th-century America.

Cafe is a hidden gem in bustling Center City

Westphal opens new dance studio

The first-ever dance studio of the Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts and Design, the Ellen Forman Memorial Dance Studio, held its grand opening Oct. 3 in Mandell Theater, according to Miriam Giguere, dance program director. The dance studio was named after the Ellen Forman Foundation, who gave the largest single donation.

This Providence plays Philadelphia Oct. 15

Out from the corner of the Pacific Northwest, This Providence have emerged proving that Christian rock doesn't have to be bland. While their songs are spiritual in many senses, they can easily be related to anyone despite the person's religious ideas. This Providence have found a way to stay true to their own beliefs but still leave their music open to the interpretation of the listener which is why they are signed to non-denominational label Fueled By Ramen, along with bands like Panic at the Disco and Paramore.
