Cardiologists Howard Eisen and Shelley Hankins have recently joined the University to establish the Center for Advanced Heart Failure Care at Hahnemann University Hospital. Eisen, a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and a Thomas Vischer Professor of Medicine, will head the Division of Cardiology.
The Office of Multicultural Activities has currently planned a total of 29 events in honor of Black History Month, traditionally celebrated in the month of February. This year 10 student organizations and at least four academic departments have organized activities.
The ABC Family Channel and Endemol USA are currently interviewing students for a new reality show based on campus life. Tentatively titled "Back to School," producers plan on having current undergraduate students accompany their parents to classes, living a realistic college life.
With funds available from the Office of the Provost, University faculty proposals for educational initiatives have been given grants from two Strategic Plan Task Forces. The Task Force on the Integration of Selected Student Services and the Development of International Cooperative Education Opportunities chaired by Vice President of Enrollment Management Joan McDonald and co-chaired by Faculty Senate Recording Secretary and Professor of Physics Teck-kah Lim has approved six of the 13 proposals that would be implemented in the Spring 2005 term.
The Chinese New Year officially began Feb. 9, signifying the commencement of the Year of the Rooster. Set on the day of the second new moon after the winter solstice, the Lunar New Year is often referred to as the "Spring Festival". In observance of this occasion, different student organizations within the University community have arranged for many events to allow students to get the feel for what this New Year has to offer.
The Campus Activities Board is currently hosting its annual LoveFest 2005, a series of events that have a Valentine's Day theme from Feb. 9 to 14. "CAB is pleased at the wide variety of events we have organized and hosted for the Drexel University students," Assistant Director of Lectures, Fine Arts and Diversity for CAB Erica Place said.
The University City District announced the appointment of Lewis Wendell as new Executive Director Feb. 8. Wendell, who will officially become the UCD Executive Director in March, will supervise a staff of 75 and an annual budget of $5.7 million. Formerly serving as Deputy Commissioner of Development for the City of New Rochelle, New York, he will continue the projects and programs currently in development, noted UCD Senior Director of Marketing and Communications Lori Brennan said.
The members of Alpha Chi Rho celebrated their ninth annual Polar Bear Dive at Cape May Shore to benefit the American Cancer Society Feb. 5. "It was a neat experience to be able to part in a big event with 50 people to run into 30 degree water to raise money for cancer," Public Relations Chair Dave Johnson said.
