Google continues to expand its diversity with the introduction of Google Desktop Search, the beta version of which was released Thursday. According to Google's Web site, the interface is very similar to their online search engine, and can be used to search your personal computer for various items.

Attention, owners of Dell laptops. On Oct. 8, Dell, working with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, voluntarily recalled 4.4 million AC adapters. Theses adapters can overheat, causing fire or electric shock. Dell has received seven complaints of overheating; one customer received a minor burn.

On Oct. 12, Microsoft released a barrage of cumulative security patches for a number of their older operating systems, server components, and software applications. The twenty patches released came with 10 security bulletins detailing other vulnerabilities.

Russian mock mission

Russian officials plan to launch an important mission that will never leave the ground. In 2006, six volunteers will enter a mock space station module for 500 days to simulate a round-trip mission to Mars. Scientists at the Russian Institute for Medical and Biological Problems hope to study the effects of an extended mission on the human body.
