The University announced the start of its new Master of Science in Higher Education degree program in a distance learning system June 14.

One of the only master's programs of its kind hosted both online and in the classroom will provide working professionals with the tools and the knowledge needed for career advancement in the field of higher education without any instrusion on a person's career.

The new curriculum combines the expediency of online study with the academic diligence and reputation of the School of Education, and offers a unique program designed to equip leaders in the higher education realm with a strong foundation for career advancement, executive and senior level positions, and future doctoral studies, according to the SoE Web site.

"This new degree offers the perfect combination of quality and convenience for working adults," Academic Director of Drexel e-Learning Kenneth Hartman said. "A world class degree is now just a 'click away' for students interested in obtaining the skills and knowledge necessary to be leaders in the field of higher education."

Drexel's e-Learning system is a subsidiary of and run entirely by the University which focuses on innovative, Internet-based distance learning programs for working professionals and corporations in the United States and abroad. It has offered online education programs since 1997 making it a pioneer in distance learning.

"The Master of Science in Higher Education represents a new direction for the School of Education," Director of SoE William Lynch said. "We've primarily been oriented toward the preparation of teachers and administrators. With the beginning of this new degree program, we'll be looking at preparing people for careers in colleges, universities, and other types of post secondary education institutions. We'll be training them for a variety of functions within those institutions, including enrollment management, institutional advancement or development, academic development, which involves issues such as teaching, learning and support services for the instructional programs at these universities. We'll also be preparing people for financial management in higher education, institutional research and general administrative functions."

The program is being delivered in multiple formats. The first part, which starts in September, will be conveyed entirely online in collaboration with DeL. The second will be a 'hybrid' format - students will come on campus periodically, but will also experience much of their instruction in an online format."

Applications are now being accepted for the fall term. Students interested in the Program can visit http://www.drexel.edu/mshe for more information on how the program operates, curriculum and admissions criteria.
