Men's basketball picked last in CAA conference

After last year's disappointing season (12-20, 5-13 Colonial Athletic Association), the men's basketball team hopes to turn things around-but without its best player, it may be a difficult challenge.

According to a vote of the league's coaches, sports information directors and media, Drexel is predicted to finish last in the conference.

"It doesn't mean anything until you finish 12th," Drexel head coach Bruiser Flint said. "What it means is that people don't expect much out of you. People in the league don't think we'll be any good."

The Dragons lost their starting frontcourt to graduation in Frank Elegar, who is 15th on Drexel's all-time scoring list and 15th on the all-time rebounding list, and Randy Oveneke.

"It is what it is," Flint said. "We did lose our best player. We didn't play well last year. I hope that's motivation for [the team]."

Eric Maynor, who was selected as the CAA Preseason Player of the Year, and the VCU Rams are predicted to win the conference, followed by Northeastern, Old Dominion and George Mason.

Drexel opens its season Nov. 18 against Penn on ESPN.
